Unframed canvas paintings are susceptible to color fading and scratches when stored with other items in a closet, basement, or garage\u2014and, worse, they can be badly warped by high\u00a0temperature and humidity. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important to store them somewhere safe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">With a climate-controlled storage unit at a nearby self\u00a0storage facility, you can store your unframed canvas paintings to ensure that they&#8217;re in good shape when you go to sell them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Below are some tips for properly prepping your\u00a0paintings for storage and moderating the temperature and humidity levels in a climate-controlled storage unit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><strong>Prepping Canvas\u00a0Paintings for\u00a0Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Even the smallest things, like dust and\u00a0dirt, can damage your paintings while they&#8217;re in storage, which is why you need to cover your paintings, keep your hands off of the canvas, and store paintings in the proper containers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">According to John Rogers, owner of\u00a0Gallery 72\u00a0in Omaha, Neb.,\u00a0artwork needs protection from dust and dirt, which can damage the paint (especially oil paints)\u00a0on canvas.\u00a0That&#8217;s why Rogers suggests using loose plastic to cover canvas paintings, as it allows enough air circulation without letting dust or dirt in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">When covering canvas\u00a0paintings, make sure not to touch the surface of the canvas since\u00a0the oils on your hands can damage\u00a0the paint as well.\u00a0If you must touch a painting\u2019s surface,\u00a0wear gloves made of 100% cotton\u2014never use latex or any other kind of non-slip material, as these can\u00a0easily rub off layers of paint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">As for storing\u00a0unframed canvas paintings in specific preservation containers, Rogers suggests rolling large paintings and storing them in diameter tubes, which prevents crushing or distortion. For this very reason, you should never keep your artwork anywhere besides a self storage unit\u00a0equipped with climate control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Climate-controlled storage is a great feature to have when storing paintings\u00a0because it allows you to monitor and maintain the temperature and humidity levels of your unit.
