A wedding dress is\u202fone of the\u202fmost sentimental\u202fpurchases a woman makes\u202fin her life, so shoving it into\u202fthe back of\u202fa\u202fcloset simply won\u2019t do. Luckily, a self storage unit is the ideal place for wedding dress storage. Whether you need to keep your dress pristine for a vow renewal,\u202fpass\u202fit\u202fon to a sister or daughter, or simply have a reminder of your special day, following these simple steps will allow you to store your gown\u202fin great shape.<\/p>\n

Keeping Your Dress White\u202f\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n

Get your dress cleaned\u202fbefore you put it in\u00a0a storage unit.\u202fCheck the label for instructions on how to best clean your gown. Some gowns require dry cleaning\u202fwhile others\u202fneed to be hand-washed. In either case, a professional cleaner with experience cleaning wedding dresses will be your best bet for preventing sneaky stains from showing up down the line.<\/p>\n

While storing your wedding dress in a self storage unit is a great option, the last thing you want to do is just put the dress into storage without proper packaging. Brides may choose to box their gowns at home or have them boxed professionally. In either case, a boxed gown should be removed and refolded about once a year to prevent creases from forming.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany new brides have found using a wardrobe box to hang the dress in will preserve its shape,\u201d\u00a0says Eddie\u00a0Johnson, field operations manager of Move It Management LLC and MoveItStorage.com<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cAdditional room in the box can be used for the veil, shoes, and other keepsakes from the special day.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you prefer not to box your dress, the dress can be bagged and hung. However, plastic bags should\u202fnever\u202fbe used for long-term\u202fstorage,\u202feven if that\u2019s the kind of bag your dress came home in. Over time, chemicals from plastic dress bags can leech out and discolor the fabric of your gown. Instead, go with\u202fa\u202fcotton\u202fgarment bag\u202fwith a well-padded hanger.<\/p>\n

As Johnson explains, a quality garment bag will “keep most dust and dirt from getting to the fabric.”\u00a0If your dress features hanging loops in addition\u202fto\u202fany straps or sleeves, hang the dress\u202fby these loops.\u202fThe padded hanger will\u00a0also\u00a0prevent strain on the\u202fbodice.<\/p>\n

The major benefit of bagging and hanging\u202fis that it\u202fdoesn\u2019t require a yearly maintenance visit, which is much more convenient since the point of storing your wedding dress is that you don\u2019t have to deal with it\u202funtil you need it again.\u202fConsider storing a clothing rack or set of shelves\u202fin your storage unit\u202fso that your dress isn’t\u202fstacked in a corner or draped over furniture, where it can get knocked on the ground or crushed by other items.<\/p>\n

The most important thing to remember when preparing your dress for storage, however, is that, if it’s done improperly, your dress can and will be ruined.<\/p>\n

Grace\u202fBuchele\u202fMineta, author of the blog\u202fHow I Became Texan,\u00a0shared the story of her mother’s badly-preserved gown (which she planned to wear at her own wedding) and\u00a0the emotional and practical trouble it caused.\u00a0Now happily married, Mineta suggests brides do their homework before\u00a0handing over their wedding dress\u00a0to someone else for preservation.<\/p>\n

“It is important to do plenty of research on the company because when given the chance to make an extra buck (knowing they won’t be caught), some companies will take the easy road,”\u00a0Mineta says. Though\u00a0she reminds future brides\u00a0that\u00a0“not all companies are like that,\u201d and great gown preservation can be done.\u00a0Look for a company\u00a0in the business \u201cbecause they love\u00a0fashion, dresses, and tradition,\u201d and your dress will be in capable hands.<\/p>\n

Staying Cool and Mildew-Free<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Johnson,\u00a0\u201cClimate-controlled\u00a0storage is a must to prevent large swings in humidity and temperature, which can prematurely age lace and delicate fabrics.\u201d\u00a0This means that climate control is an important factor for storing a wedding dress.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest enemies of clothing preservation is moisture, which can sneak in with major changes in temperature,\u00a0particularly in humid summer months.<\/p>\n

With\u202f51% of weddings<\/a>\u00a0(and the subsequent storage of those gowns)\u00a0occurring from May to\u202fAugust,\u202fa climate-controlled unit is an important investment. You\u2019ll also want to keep your dress, whether bagged or boxed, away from any harsh light.
